Arsenal add 12 Nigerian players to Champions League squad

Posted : 19 September 2024

Arsenal have officially included twelve Nigerian players in their squad for the UEFA Champions League ahead of their first match against Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium. These players, added to the B List, were all born on or after January 1, 2003, and have been eligible to represent Arsenal for an uninterrupted period of at least two years since turning 15.

The Nigerian players listed are goalkeepers Brian Okonkwo and Khari Ranson, defenders Josh Nichols, Cam'ron Ismail, Joshua Ogunnaike, and Samuel Chinedu, midfielders Ethan Nwaneri, Zac Shuaib, Andre Annous, and Ifeoluwa Ibrahim, as well as strikers Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Daniel Oyetunde.

The B List primarily consists of homegrown talent and players from the Arsenal academy, all aged 21 or under. These players have been included as part of UEFA's rules, which allow teams to register a secondary list of young players eligible for their respective clubs for a significant period.

Both Ethan Nwaneri and Nathan Butler-Oyedeji were involved in the first team's training session on September 18, at Arsenal's training facility in London Colney. They are expected to be considered for the matchday squad against Atalanta.

While Nwaneri and Butler-Oyedeji have previously been involved with the senior team, the other players have primarily represented the club at youth levels. Nwaneri has made appearances in three first-team games, most recently in the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, whereas Butler-Oyedeji has been a non-playing substitute in past matches.

Additionally, Khari Ranson, Josh Nichols, Ife Ibrahim, and Cam'ron Ismail are part of Arsenal’s UEFA Youth League squad, showcasing their potential to be future stars for the club in Europe.
