Fenerbahce has lashed out at Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk, accusing him of deliberately provoking their coach, Jose Mourinho, during a heated encounter following their Turkish Cup match on Wednesday. The club claimed Buruk acted dramatically "as if he had been shot" after Mourinho appeared to lightly touch his nose during a post-match exchange.
Fenerbahce’s statement described Buruk’s actions as calculated and unprofessional, alleging he used disrespectful gestures to incite a reaction from Mourinho, who was seen gesturing back during the confrontation.
The tension between the two Turkish giants escalated after Galatasaray’s 2-1 victory, with Galatasaray accusing Mourinho of a physical assault on Buruk. The incident happened in the center circle after the final whistle, where both managers were speaking with match officials.
Fenerbahce responded by defending their manager’s behavior, calling Buruk’s reaction exaggerated and reminiscent of similar antics from his playing days. The club emphasized that the entire episode was caught on camera, undermining Buruk's claims.
While Buruk attempted to downplay the clash in his post-match press conference, saying there was “nothing” between him and Mourinho, Galatasaray stirred further controversy by posting a parody video on X mocking Mourinho in the style of the animated show South Park.
The animosity was mirrored on the pitch, where a scuffle in stoppage time saw Fenerbahce’s Mert Yandas and Galatasaray’s Kerem Demirbay and Baris Yilmaz all receive red cards.
This confrontation follows a string of heated incidents between the clubs. Earlier in February, after a goalless league match, Galatasaray accused Mourinho of making racist remarks and vowed to pursue legal action.
Mourinho was subsequently hit with a four-match suspension and fined over £35,000 by the Turkish Football Federation. In response, the Portuguese manager filed a lawsuit against Galatasaray, claiming they had violated his personal rights.
