Ja Morant Faces NBA Scrutiny Again After Gun Gesture During Win Over Heat

Posted : 04 April 2025

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant has once again found himself in the spotlight for an inappropriate gesture after mimicking shooting a gun with his finger during Thursday's 110-108 victory over the Miami Heat.

This incident comes just days after Morant and Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield received warnings from the NBA for making similar gestures during a game on Tuesday. Morant’s actions, following a 3-pointer with 7:51 left in the first quarter, led to scrutiny as he ran back on defense with his left hand forming a gun shape.

The NBA had already addressed similar gestures by both Morant and Hield, with sources revealing that the league deemed the actions inappropriate but not violent in nature. Both the Grizzlies and Warriors were issued warnings, as the NBA looked to avoid any further controversies.

Despite the league's warning, Morant appeared unfazed by the criticism, acknowledging that he’s "used to it" after being scrutinized for his actions over the past two years. He expressed indifference toward the backlash, citing his reputation as a "villain" during that time.

Morant's history with the NBA has been marred by two separate suspensions for brandishing firearms on social media. In March 2023, Morant was suspended after a livestream incident at a Denver nightclub, followed by a 25-game suspension to start the 2023-24 season for a similar incident.

Despite these past controversies, Morant helped secure the win against the Heat with a clutch shot at the buzzer, making a 9-foot 2-point shot that sealed the game.
