Rivers United FC's former players raise alarm over unpaid wages

Posted : 13 October 2023
A cross-section of Rivers United FC's former players have raised alarm over unpaid wages accusing the Commissioner  of Sports, Green and the Team Manager  Kpalukwu of bias

The Pride of Rivers are alleged of failure to pay some of its players their owed wages for the services rendered to the club ,during  their CAF Champions League campaign.

The club has also been caught in the web of unpaid match bonuses owed some former  players, even when the club had pocked huge some of monies paid to it by CAF  for its appearances on the continental  prestigious soccer scene.

The affected players, who pleaded for anonymity to avoid victimization  accused the Pride of Rivers management led by the state Commissioner of Sports, Christopher Green of deliberate deprivation of their entitled wages.

They further accused the club’s General Manager, Okey Kpalukwu of been part of the execution of the conspiracy to exclude the deprived  players of their legitimate wages.

Independent checks however revealed that most of the affected player are those, who are no longer on the payroll of the club, namely Ebube Duru, Maurice Chukwu, Ndasi Dennis, Ohawume Malachi,  Darlington Ovunda, Naibe Akpesiri, Chukwudi Lawrence , Lawrence Edward, Agu Kenechukwu, Bolaji Sakin, and Mohammed Shiraz.

It was also gathered that those players still on the services of the club have been paid same entitlements, resulting in the suspicion of  discriminate payment of entitlements as against laid down football wages rules.

An impeccable source confirmed that, club Chief  Coach Fatai Osho is also being owed two  years supposed to be earned assorted wages.

A player who confided in our reporter said “ all they tell us all the time, when we request for our money is that the state government is yet to release funds to the club, that the club is currently borrowing money to run its activities.”

The players pleaded to the governor of Rivers State to look into the matter as some of the affected players are yet to secure a new job.
