Formula One to Eliminate Fastest Lap Bonus Point Starting Next Season
Posted : 18 October 2024
Formula One will no longer award a bonus point for the fastest lap beginning next year, as confirmed by the FIA on Thursday.
This rule, which was reintroduced in 2019 after being previously dropped in the 1950s, allowed drivers to earn an extra point for setting the fastest lap during a race, provided they finished in the top ten.
The change was announced just ahead of the United States Grand Prix, alongside updates to the 2024 and 2025 sporting regulations approved by the World Motor Sport Council.
Additionally, teams will now be required to field a young driver during free practice twice per car per season, up from once.
