Budget Cuts Threaten Kenya's Anti-Doping Efforts, Risk International Ban

Posted : 17 September 2024

Kenya's fight against doping is in jeopardy due to severe budget cuts, which have halted all testing and could lead to the country being banned from international competitions.

The Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) received only 20 million shillings ($155,000) for the new financial year, significantly less than the 288 million shillings ($2.2 million) needed.

The budget cuts, resulting from the government's scrapping of a controversial tax bill, threaten ADAK's compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code and could undermine efforts to address doping issues in Kenyan athletics.
