Key British Rugby Sevens Player Withdraws Amid Racism Controversy
Posted : 30 July 2024
On Tuesday, Amy Wilson-Hardy, a key player in Britain's Olympic rugby sevens team, withdrew from the competition following the emergence of a racist image of her with a blacked-out face.
The British Olympic Association has launched an investigation into the incident, which also featured a derogatory caption.
Wilson-Hardy was replaced by Abi Burton for Britain’s match against China, which ended in a 19-15 loss for the British team.
Team GB captain Emma Uren and coach Ciaran Beattie chose to focus on the sport, downplaying the controversy, as the team faces additional setbacks with their men’s team missing Olympic qualification and the women’s team struggling in the tournament.
