Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, once ranked world No. 8, ended his professional tennis career on Thursday with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the second round of the Argentina Open.

Schwartzman had announced this tournament as his farewell and had managed a surprise win in the first round over Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, his first victory in 16 months.

The 32-year-old, known for his determination despite his 1.70-meter height, had a standout career, including a French Open semifinal in 2020 and four ATP titles, with his last victory in Buenos Aires in 2021.
