Sweden Closes Rape Investigation Against Kylian Mbappé

Posted : 12 December 2024

The rape investigation against Kylian Mbappé in Sweden has been officially closed, as announced by the country's prosecutor. The investigation, which was initiated after a woman filed a complaint in October, alleged that the Real Madrid star was involved in a sexual assault at a hotel where he was staying with his entourage.

The chief investigator, Marina Cherkova, stated that there was insufficient evidence to continue the probe, though the prosecutor did not explicitly name Mbappé as the suspect in the case. However, Swedish media reports have confirmed that he was indeed the player in question.

Mbappé, who was notably absent from the French national team’s call-up two months ago, had been in Stockholm on October 11, the same day France faced Israel in a match. The media then reported that local police opened an investigation following the rape complaint.

At the time, the French national team’s coach, Didier Deschamps, defended Mbappé, expressing concern over the negative atmosphere surrounding the player. Deschamps emphasized that while it was crucial to consider the facts, accusations should not be taken at face value without caution.

The French star also denied the allegations on social media, labeling the claims as "fake news" in a tweet that many speculated was directed at his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The tweet came a day before a legal hearing concerning a dispute between Mbappé and PSG, which fueled further speculation.

While the case has now been closed, it still left a cloud over the player, whose recent performances have been under intense scrutiny.

In recent weeks, Mbappé has faced criticism for his fluctuating form, particularly in Spain, where he has been heavily criticized by the media. Despite scoring four goals in his last eight appearances across all competitions, his missed penalty in the Champions League loss to Liverpool at Anfield has added to the pressure surrounding him.

This legal matter, combined with ongoing performance issues, continues to cast a shadow over the star's career.
