Scottish Basketball Club Fires Player Linked to US Murder Case

The Caledonia Gladiators, a Scottish basketball team, recently signed Malik Dunbar, only to terminate his contract due to a serious disciplinary breach unrelated to the investigation surrounding his alleged involvement in a murder case in the United States. Dunbar, 28, had joined the team last month, but it was later revealed that he was linked to the shooting of Arthur Braxton, who was killed outside a restaurant in Augusta, Georgia, on October 4. Despite the club's ignorance of the allegations at the time of signing him, they swiftly acted to end his contract.
The Gladiators also terminated the contract of another player, Jared Wilson-Frame, who had signed with the club the same month. Both dismissals were reportedly due to a disciplinary matter within the club but were not related to the ongoing investigation into the murder. The club, based in East Kilbride, Scotland, confirmed they had not been informed of any allegations against Dunbar during the player’s due diligence process before joining. An internal review of the signing process is currently underway.
Malik Dunbar, a talented small forward and shooting guard, had an impressive college career at Auburn University, helping his team reach the prestigious Final Four in 2019. He later played internationally in Germany and Egypt and had stints in the NBA's G League. The allegations surrounding Dunbar have now come to light, with media reports revealing that he had been arrested in August on charges related to gun and drug possession in Augusta.
While the sports agency representing Dunbar, Interperformances, stated that they were unaware of the links to the shooting, they have acknowledged learning about the situation through media reports. The club’s decision to terminate his contract comes as both the Gladiators and the agency continue to respond to the unfolding developments regarding the player’s past.
