Italian Sprinter Alessandro Ossola Proposes to Girlfriend at Paris Paralympics

Italian sprinter Alessandro Ossola came to the Paris 2024 Paralympics aiming for gold but left with something even more special after proposing to his girlfriend in front of tens of thousands of fans at the Stade de France. Despite missing out on a place in the final of the T63 100m, the 36-year-old seized the moment for an unforgettable proposal.
After his race, Ossola ran to the stands where his parents and girlfriend, Arianna, were seated, dropped to one knee, and asked her to marry him. “She told me, ‘You’re crazy, you’re crazy,’ and then she kissed me—it was really exciting,” Ossola shared with the BBC World Service.
Ossola had been planning the proposal for over a month, knowing that no matter how he finished in the race, he had something much more significant on the line. He had arranged for a friend to bring the engagement ring to him at the end of the race. Reflecting on the moment, he remarked, “The Paralympics is such an amazing event, and Paris, with all its beauty, was the perfect place to do it.”
The proposal held deep significance for Ossola, who has overcome incredible challenges since a tragic motorcycle accident in 2015 claimed the life of his first wife and led to the amputation of most of his left leg. Recalling the difficult times, Ossola said, "It’s been a long journey. I’m a positive guy, but at the beginning, it was hard. Sports helped me out of the darkness and turmoil." He credits his Para-athletics training for helping him focus on the future and believes the Paralympics can play a significant role in changing perceptions about disability.
As for the rest of their stay in Paris, Ossola and Arianna plan to keep it simple. “We’re definitely going to have a good dinner,” he said. “We love Paris, and the city of love was the perfect place to ask her to be my wife.”
