In Forbes’ 2024 ranking of the highest-paid footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo once again topped the list, achieving remarkable earnings of $285 million over the past year. Known for his lucrative contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr, the Portuguese star pulled in around $220 million from his team salary, supplemented by an additional $65 million from endorsements. Ronaldo’s financial success not only positions him as the leading football earner but also as the highest-paid athlete globally across all sports.
Following closely is Argentine icon Lionel Messi, whose ventures with Inter Miami and extensive sponsorship deals netted him around $135 million this year. Of this, $75 million originated from off-field endorsement agreements, underscoring his continued global influence. Messi’s earnings secured him the second spot, just behind his long-time rival Ronaldo, further solidifying his presence both on and off the field as a major figure in the world of sports.
Brazilian forward Neymar took third place with an impressive $110 million, despite limited playtime last year at Al Hilal. His rise in the rankings came at the expense of Kylian Mbappe, who dropped to fifth place amid recent legal distractions. Mbappe earned $90 million, with a substantial amount coming from endorsement contracts. Meanwhile, another star in the Saudi league, Karim Benzema of Al-Ittihad, claimed the fourth spot, pulling in a solid $104 million, cementing the growing financial draw of the Saudi Pro League.
The rest of Forbes' top 10 list featured players from Europe’s elite leagues as well as Saudi Arabia. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Premier League’s top scorer, placed sixth with $60 million, while Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior followed in seventh with $55 million. Mohamed Salah, rumored to be departing Liverpool soon, ranked eighth at $53 million, while Sadio Mane, also of Al Nassr, came in ninth at $52 million. Rounding out the list was Kevin De Bruyne, the influential Belgian midfielder for Manchester City, with earnings of $39 million.
