Tennis legend and equality advocate Billie Jean King has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first woman recognized in the newly established sports entertainment category.
At 81, King expressed hope that her recognition would pave the way for others, saying she didn't want to be the last woman celebrated in this way. Her star marks the 2,807th to be placed on the iconic walkway, which stretches along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Los Angeles.
King’s illustrious tennis career includes 39 Grand Slam titles in singles and doubles, making her one of the sport’s all-time greats. Beyond her achievements on the court, she has played a pivotal role in championing gender equality and social justice.
Her historic victory over Bobby Riggs in the 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" remains one of the most memorable moments in sports history, symbolizing a turning point in the fight for women’s rights in athletics.
In addition to founding the Women’s Tennis Association, King’s contributions have been widely recognized. In 2020, the prestigious Fed Cup was renamed the Billie Jean King Cup in her honor. Her legacy continues to inspire generations both on and off the court.
