Benjamin Mendy Claims Teammates Supported Him Financially Amid Legal Battles

Posted : 14 October 2024

Former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy has revealed in an employment tribunal that he borrowed money from teammates to cover legal expenses and child support following charges of sexual offenses. Mendy is seeking £11.5 million ($15 million) in unpaid wages from Manchester City, which ceased payments after he faced serious allegations, including rape and sexual assault, in 2021.

In January 2023, Mendy was acquitted of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, but the jury could not reach a verdict on another count of rape and one count of attempted rape.

After a retrial, he was ultimately found not guilty of both remaining charges. Mendy joined Manchester City from Monaco for a reported fee of £52 million in 2017 but was released by the club in June 2023 following the expiration of his contract.

According to court documents presented at the tribunal, Mendy quickly depleted his finances and was forced to sell his Cheshire mansion to manage his legal fees, bills, and child support obligations after his wages were withheld.

In his witness statement, he expressed feelings of distress regarding his inability to pay child support and mentioned that teammates Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez lent him money to help cover his expenses.

Mendy, who now plays for French Ligue 2 club Lorient, asserted that a senior official at Manchester City assured him he would receive his unpaid wages once he was exonerated. While the club continued to pay Mendy's £500,000 monthly salary following his initial arrest in November 2020, they contended that they were no longer obligated to do so after the charges were filed, citing his bail conditions and a Football Association suspension that rendered him unable to perform his duties.

In his statement, Mendy expressed frustration that Manchester City had not acknowledged the impact of their actions, stating that he believes he deserves to be compensated for the wages he lost due to what he claims were false accusations. The tribunal is expected to take place over two days.
