The management of Nationwide League One (NLO) announced on Tuesday that MTN, a top telecommunications brand in Nigeria, will be the headline sponsor of the NLO Cup.
Sixteen top teams will participate in the maiden edition of the NLO Cup, scheduled to kick off from Nov. 24 to Dec. 9 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano and Uyo Township Stadium in Uyo.
The Chairman of the nation's third-tier league, His Excellency Silas Agara, made the groundbreaking announcement in Abuja.
"On behalf of the leadership of the NLO, we are delighted to announce MTN as the headline sponsor of the NLO Cup.
"The NLO Cup tournament was conceived as a medium to celebrate teams that have excelled in the transition from the State League to NLO U19 and from the Youth League to the NLO Division One.
"The credibility of the NLO over time has led MTN to align with the nation's third-tier domestic league for this project.
"The success of this partnership follows over two years of discussions between NLO and MTN to reach this stage.
"MTN, as a responsible corporate organization, aims to support Nigerian youths through grassroots football development, recognizing football as the primary source of joy for over 60 percent of the youth.
"The telecommunications brand has identified Nationwide League One (NLO) as the most critical and reliable partner to achieve this aim.
"MTN will use the NLO to promote their MoMo Money as a safe platform for Nigerian youths to save, conduct business, and more.
"They will also be giving out numerous freebies and gift items to youths attending the NLO Cup matches. The telecommunications brand aims to revitalize the way Nigerian youths participate in football."
