Zverev survives epic battle, Alcaraz advances in Australian Open

In a thrilling encounter, sixth seed Alexander Zverev narrowly avoided an Australian Open upset, needing five sets to overcome the challenge of qualifier Lukas Klein and secure his spot in the third round. The Olympic champion expressed admiration for Klein's performance, acknowledging that the Slovakian "probably deserved to win more."

 

 Zverev, 26, battled for four hours and 30 minutes, clinching victory with a 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (10-7) scoreline. Despite the tense battle, Zverev expressed relief at progressing and is set to face American world number 91 Alex Michelsen in the next round.

 

Meanwhile, second seed Carlos Alcaraz faced a formidable challenge against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. Alcaraz emerged victorious in four sets, securing a 6-4, 6-7(3-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win on Rod Laver Arena.

 

The Spanish player, who managed to avoid a fifth set, expressed satisfaction with his performance against the resilient opponent. Alcaraz is now set to face Chinese wildcard Shang Juncheng in the upcoming round.

 

In another dramatic five-setter, eleventh seed Casper Ruud prevailed against Max Purcell, securing a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-7) victory. The Norwegian player acknowledged the challenging match and praised Purcell's elevated level of play.

 

Ruud is now scheduled to face British number one Cameron Norrie, who also triumphed in a five-setter against Giulio Zeppieri. Reflecting on the intense encounter, Ruud mentioned that the match could have gone either way, highlighting Purcell's fast and unorthodox playing style.
