Fourth seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the second round of the US Open with a hard-fought victory over fellow German Maximilian Marterer, winning 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2. Zverev showcased his powerful serve throughout the match, delivering 21 aces and securing 79 percent of his first serve points on the Grandstand court.
Despite a strong performance by the unseeded Marterer, who entered the draw as a "lucky loser" following Emil Ruusuvuori's withdrawal, Zverev's dominance proved too much to overcome. Marterer managed to claim a tightly contested second set in a tiebreak, but Zverev's relentless power ultimately prevailed.
Zverev, who showed signs of frustration with 44 unforced errors during the match, will face the winner of the match between Frenchman Alexandre Muller and Australia's Adam Walton in the second round.
