Alexander Zverev began his clay-court season on a positive note by defeating Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the ATP tournament in Munich. The German, currently ranked world No. 3, had suffered a setback at the Monte Carlo Masters where he lost his opening match to Matteo Berrettini, missing an opportunity to challenge Jannik Sinner for the top spot in the rankings.
That early exit, combined with Carlos Alcaraz's recent triumph, led to Zverev slipping down in the rankings and raised concerns about his readiness for the French Open next month.
In Monday's match, Zverev quickly asserted control by breaking Muller in the opening game, though the Frenchman briefly leveled at 3-3. Zverev responded by regaining momentum to close out the first set in under 50 minutes.
The top seed dominated the second set, securing three breaks of serve to seal the win in just one hour and 20 minutes. Despite his early exits in recent tournaments since losing the Australian Open final to Sinner, Zverev appears determined to regain form on his favored surface.
The former Munich champion from 2017 and 2018 is now aiming for a deeper run after years of falling short at the tournament. He will next face either fellow German Daniel Altmaier or Taiwan’s Tseng Chun-hsin in the second round.
Elsewhere in Munich, Ben Shelton survived a scare against world No. 410 Borna Gojo, coming from a set down and saving three match points to win 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7-3). Defending champion Jan-Lennard Struff will begin his title defense on Tuesday against Francisco Cerundolo.
