China's Zheng Qinwen has made an impressive entrance at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, advancing to the semifinals with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over fourth-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini. This achievement makes the 22-year-old the youngest player to reach the WTA Finals semifinals since Petra Kvitova in 2011. Zheng’s powerful serve was a key factor in her success, as she struck 12 aces, marking her 30th win in 34 matches since Wimbledon. Reflecting on her performance, Zheng expressed satisfaction with her serving and composure on the court.
Zheng's journey to the semifinals also places her in esteemed company, as she becomes only the second Chinese player to reach this stage at the WTA Finals, following Li Na’s feat nearly 11 years ago. Proud of her accomplishment, Zheng remarked on the challenge of competing in her group, describing the experience as one she embraced with an open mind. Finishing second in her group, she advanced behind top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, who also secured her semifinal spot earlier in the tournament.
Meanwhile, world number one Aryna Sabalenka faced a tough challenge in her final group match against fifth-seed Elena Rybakina. Although Sabalenka managed to recover from a set down, Rybakina ultimately triumphed 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. For Rybakina, it was a rewarding way to close her season, as she earned a rare win over the world number one, becoming one of only two players, along with Iga Swiatek, to defeat Sabalenka multiple times this year.
