In the Bank of Communications Zhengzhou Open, Zheng Qinwen secured an impressive victory by defeating the third seed, Maria Sakkari, for the first time. She won the match 7-6(2), 6-3, advancing to her fifth quarterfinal of the year.
This marked Zheng's fifth career Top 10 win and her first triumph over Sakkari in their three meetings. Zheng had previously faced defeats by Sakkari, including her Grand Slam debut at the 2022 Australian Open. However, this time, she showed her determination to win.
Zheng, aged 21, started the match with aggressive play, breaking Sakkari's serve early on. The set was closely contested, with numerous break point opportunities, but only two were converted. Zheng was able to secure the first set with a dominant tiebreak. In the second set, there were fewer opportunities for both players, but Zheng managed to secure a break of serve, ultimately winning the match.
Zheng's win was a result of her aggressive game plan, improved first-serve percentage, and a strong overall performance. She will face Anhelina Kalinina in the next round. Kalinina reached her first quarterfinal since May with a victory over Vera Zvonareva. Zheng expressed her satisfaction with her performance, emphasizing the importance of being aggressive on the court.
In another upset, Jasmine Paolini, ranked at a career-high No. 31, overcame her historical difficulties against Caroline Garcia. She saved four match points to defeat the No. 6 seed 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Paolini's determination and aggressive play paid off, earning her the win and her third career Top 10 victory. This remarkable performance has taken her to her fourth quarterfinal of 2023.
