China's Zhang Shuai, currently ranked 595th, achieved a remarkable upset by defeating US Open semifinalist Emma Navarro with a score of 6-4, 6-2 in Beijing on Friday. This victory marked a significant milestone for the 35-year-old, as it was her second win in just a few days after ending a lengthy 600-day match winless streak. Competing as a wildcard in the China Open, Zhang is the lowest-ranked player ever to participate in the main draw of a WTA 1000 tournament.
Earlier this week, Zhang secured her first singles match victory since January 2023, breaking a disheartening run of 24 consecutive losses on the WTA Tour. She started her journey in Beijing with a straight-sets win over American player McCartney Kessler, who is ranked 65th. Zhang, a two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, has faced numerous injuries throughout her career but demonstrated her resilience with this unexpected win against the sixth-seeded Navarro, who had recently reached the semifinals at the US Open.
Following her impressive performance, Zhang expressed her surprise at defeating Navarro, a player considered a strong favorite. “Another great win for my career because everybody knows I have gone a long time without winning a singles match,” she remarked.
Zhang will next face Belgium’s Greet Minnen, currently ranked 94th in the world, and noted that playing in Beijing feels particularly comfortable for her, given her roots in the nearby city of Tianjin. “I can play Zhang Shuai tennis,” she added, reflecting her renewed confidence on the court.
