Zhang Shuai's China Open Run Ends in Quarterfinals Against Badosa

Posted : 03 October 2024

Zhang Shuai’s inspiring run at the China Open came to a halt in the quarterfinals on Thursday, as she was defeated in straight sets by Spain’s Paula Badosa. Despite her impressive performance, Zhang, currently ranked 595 in the world, could not overcome the former world No. 2, who won 6-1, 7-6 (7/4). Badosa now advances to face either fourth seed Coco Gauff or Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva in the semifinals.

At 35 years old, Zhang entered the tournament on a challenging streak, having lost 24 consecutive singles matches over more than 600 days, the second-longest losing streak in WTA Tour history since the Open Era began in 1968. However, her fortunes turned in Beijing as she broke her losing spell, winning her first match and then adding three more victories to reach the quarterfinals. Her appearance in the final eight was a significant achievement, as Zhang was the lowest-ranked player to reach that stage at the China Open.

Despite the electric support from a nearly full crowd of 15,000 at Diamond Court, Zhang struggled early in her match against Badosa. A flurry of unforced errors saw her fall behind 4-0 in the first set. Although she managed to hold serve for the first time, the Spaniard quickly wrapped up the set in just 23 minutes, marking the first set Zhang had dropped during her tournament run.

In the second set, Zhang showed resilience, breaking Badosa’s serve and going up 2-0. However, Badosa, aiming for her fifth singles title, fought back and ultimately secured victory on her first match point, with Zhang’s final forehand return sailing wide. It was a bittersweet end to a remarkable comeback tournament for Zhang.
