Young South African Team Maintains Group II Status at Billie Jean King Cup

Posted : 14 April 2025

South Africa’s young women’s tennis team successfully retained their position in Europe/Africa Group II after a spirited performance at the Billie Jean King Cup tournament in Larnaca, Cyprus. Competing against more experienced opponents over six days, the team finished third in their first-round group.

They recorded a solid 3-0 victory over Kosovo but were narrowly defeated by North Macedonia and also fell to Norway, which kept them out of contention for the top spots.

In the placement playoffs, South Africa narrowly lost 2-1 to Israel and later suffered a 2-0 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, ultimately securing ninth place in the 11-team competition.

Despite not challenging for promotion, the team accomplished their main objective of staying in Group II, an achievement made more impressive by the squad’s youth and relative inexperience at this level of international competition.

Led by captain Roxanne Clarke, the team—comprising teenagers Jahnie van Zyl, Donna le Roux, Abigayel Vosloo, Kaitlyn Ramduth, and Marilouise van Zyl—gained invaluable match experience.

Clarke expressed pride in their performance, noting that the players met their goals and would benefit from the lessons learned. Georgia and Norway earned promotion to Group I, while Estonia and Kosovo were relegated to Group III following the final standings.
