After a hiatus since 2019 due to the discovery of Covid-19 in Wuhan, the Wuhan Open makes its return to the women's tennis schedule, as confirmed by Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday. The tournament, classified as a WTA 1000 event, had been absent from the WTA circuit since the pandemic prompted the city's first lockdown in January 2020.
Wuhan, renowned as the hometown of former Australian Open and French Open champion Li Na, experienced a surge in the popularity of tennis over the past two decades. The city also played a pivotal role in the development of players like Australian Open finalist Zheng Qinwen, who relocated there during her childhood for training purposes, further contributing to the region's tennis culture.
Jorge Salkeld, Senior Vice President of Octagon Tennis, expressed enthusiasm for the return of elite tennis competition to Wuhan, emphasizing the city's vibrancy and significance in the Asian tennis landscape. The Wuhan Open is scheduled to take place from October 7 to 13 at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre, marking a significant milestone in the resurgence of sporting events following the pandemic-related disruptions.
