Wu Yibing collapses during Washington tournament against Yusuke Watnoki

Posted : 01 August 2023
In a frightening incident at the Washington tournament, Chinese tennis player Wu Yibing, currently ranked 90th in the world, collapsed on the court during his first-round match against Japan's Yusuke Watnoki.

Yibing was leading 1-4 in the first set when he walked over to his seat to take a drink and suddenly collapsed. The match took place in scorching temperatures, with the on-court conditions even warmer.

Concerned doctors rushed to assess his condition, but even after being attended to, he appeared faint. Photos on social media showed someone holding an umbrella to provide shade for Yibing as he left the court. Tennis journalist Jose Morgado described the images as "scary," and fans expressed their well-wishes for his swift recovery.

The match was temporarily halted, and it was ultimately decided that Yibing would retire from the match to focus on his recovery. The tournament organizers officially stated that he withdrew due to "illness."

It is worth noting that just a few weeks ago, during his Wimbledon match against American Frances Tiafoe, Yibing also experienced a collapse on the court but continued playing. He attributed the incident at that time to feeling unwell after consuming food the previous night and nearly losing consciousness before the match.

Despite the unfortunate health setbacks, Yibing has been enjoying the best year of his career. He achieved victory at the Dallas tournament last February, propelling him to a career-high ranking of No. 58 in the world, the highest ever for a tennis player from China. In the previous year, Yibing made history by becoming the first Chinese tennis player since 1946 to reach the third round of the U.S. Open.
