Back for another thrilling round in 2023, the highly anticipated WTT Contender Almaty promises excitement. With the stage set in the Table Tennis Centre ADD, qualifying matches are scheduled from August 29-30, followed by the main draw taking place from August 31 to September 3.
A substantial prize purse of USD$75,000 awaits the participants, while the champions will also earn a valuable 400 ITTF World Ranking Points.
Returning to defend his title, Ruwen Filus brings his solid defence back to Almaty. The Men's Singles champion of the 2022 edition crafted a remarkable comeback victory against Lin Yun-Ju. Overcoming a daunting 0-3 deficit, Filus snatched victory with four consecutive game wins, claiming the WTT Series title. As he seeks a consecutive triumph in Kazakhstan, Filus faces the challenge of Lin, his old rival and the event's top seed.
Xiaoxin Yang is ready to prove her mettle in Almaty. In the previous year, she entered as the Women's Singles 2nd seed but fell in the semifinals to Fu Yu. Now, in 2023, Yang returns as the top seed, determined to secure a WTT Series title and enhance her World Ranking. With her current position at World No.12 and 140pts set to expire in September, Yang aims to accumulate points to break into the Top 10 by the year's end.
Local supporters will have their eyes on Kazakhstan's Kirill Gerassimenko, a hometown hero. Holding the World No.74 ranking, Gerassimenko has received a wildcard entry, positioning him for a strong performance. Having reached the quarterfinals in WTT Contender Zagreb earlier this year, he aims to shine again in Almaty and ignite the stadium with his dynamic play.
