Fan Zhendong emerged victorious in a thrilling Men's Singles final against Wang Chuqin at the WTT Star Contender Ljubljana 2022. The top-seeded Fan claimed the title in a seven-game marathon match, winning 4-3 (15-13, 8-11, 3-11, 11-4, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10).
This victory not only secured Fan his first-ever WTT Star Contender title but also propelled him back to the World No.1 ranking, reclaiming the position from Wang.
The match followed the anticipated script as Fan displayed precise serves, powerful forehands, and solid backhands, while Wang showcased agility and piercing shots.
The game went back and forth, with Fan winning a crucial deuce to get on the scoreboard. In the following games, Wang found his rhythm and took a 2-1 lead with his impressive play.
Fan, however, mounted a comeback with increased aggression, attacking relentlessly and winning two consecutive games to move within one game of the title. Not willing to go down without a fight, Wang shifted into attack mode, utilizing his chiquita backhand and defending every point. He secured an 11-7 victory to force a deciding seventh game.
The decider proved to be a tense battle, with neither player able to break the deadlock. Momentum swung back and forth, and both players made unforced errors. Fan gained a two-point lead at 10-8 but faltered, allowing Wang to level the score. Eventually, a risky serve from Fan followed by a powerful forehand earned him the match point, which Wang couldn't overcome.
Fan expressed his satisfaction with the hard-fought victory, acknowledging the fierceness of the match and the adjustments he made to secure the win. The victory marked Fan's third title in the WTT Series 2023, adding to his previous successes at Singapore Smash and WTT Champions Xinxiang.
With the 600 ranking points earned from the tournament, Fan is set to regain the World No.1 ranking in the Week 28 publication.
On the other hand, Wang's 600 points from the previous WTT Star Contender ESS 2022 will expire, strengthening Fan's hold on the top spot. The result bodes well for Fan Zhendong as he continues to make his mark in the world of table tennis.
