WTT Contender Lima 2023 is set to take place in Peru, and the country is ready to welcome some of the world's finest athletes. The event features several WTT Series 2023 titleholders and a defending champion from 2022, all geared up to showcase their skills in Lima. Here's a rundown of what to expect before the matches kick off.
Venue and Dates: The Vila Deportiva Nacional will be the center of action. Qualifying matches will be held from 31 July to 2 August, followed by the main draw taking place between 3-6 August.
Prize and Points: The total prize pool amounts to 75,000 USD, and the winners will earn 400 ITTF World Ranking points.
Defending Champion's Return: Dang Qiu, the defending Men's Singles champion, received a wildcard to participate in Lima and is determined to secure back-to-back titles. Peru proved to be a significant milestone for him last year, clinching his second international singles title and the first in the WTT Series.
The 2022 final featured a face-off between Qiu and fellow German Dimitrij Ovtcharov, who will also be competing in Lima as the 2nd seed. A potential rematch between these two finalists adds excitement to the event.
Mima vs. Miu: Mima Ito will lead the Women's Singles main draw as the top seed. The Japanese star already has one title under her belt this year, winning the WTT Contender Amman.
However, she faces competition from Miu Hirano, who is eager to challenge for the top spot. Hirano started the year ranked World No.20 but impressively climbed to No.14 before settling at No.17 before Lima.
Her recent victory at WTT Contender Zagreb 2023, where she defeated World No.1 Sun Yingsha in the final, highlights her formidable skills. The rivalry between Mima and Miu continues to captivate table tennis fans worldwide, and this tournament might witness another thrilling encounter between the two in Peru.
In other sporting news, during the early stages of the race, a breakaway group consisting of Jacopo Mosca (LTK), Lorenzo Milesi (DSM), and Sam Brand (TNN) managed to establish a substantial ten-minute lead over the main group.
