WTT Contender Lima 2023 has seen a major shakeup in the Men's Singles category as both the top two seeds, Hugo Calderano and Dimitrij Ovtcharov, were eliminated in the round of 32, opening up the draw in Peru.
In a surprising upset, 2nd seed Ovtcharov was defeated by a brilliant performance from Joao Geraldo. The World No.46 secured a 3-1 victory (11-6, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6) to advance to the round of 16.
For Geraldo, it was a significant turnaround from last year when he was unable to progress beyond the first day of the main draw. He expressed his delight in the win, acknowledging that facing a tough opponent like Ovtcharov made it even sweeter.
The key factor in Geraldo's victory was his success in handling Ovtcharov's serves, limiting the German's ability to apply pressure. With a 2-1 game score in his favor, Geraldo maintained focus and confidence, securing a 5-1 lead in the fourth game and ultimately clinching the match.
In another upset at the top of the draw, Yang Wang secured a straight games win over 1st seed Hugo Calderano (12-10, 12-10, 11-8). Despite Calderano's higher ranking at World No.4 compared to Wang's No.51, the Slovak chopper's defensive style proved to be effective against the Brazilian.
Wang's clutch performances in crucial moments helped him secure the first two games in deuce, and he maintained control in the third game to seal the victory.
With the top of the draw secured and a path set against the 1st seed, Yang Wang now faces Jonathan Groth in the round of 16. Wang will need to be at his best, as he has yet to secure a win against the Danish left-hander in their previous encounters.
