Posted : 05 July 2023
In the second part of Wang Chuqin's journey to becoming world number one in table tennis, his remarkable rise to stardom is highlighted. After his impressive performance at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, Wang transitioned from his youth career to the senior level with a bang.
Prior to the Games, he had already displayed glimpses of his potential, including a runner-up finish at the 2018 ITTF Hungarian Open and winning gold as part of China's Men's Team at the 2018 Asian Games and the 2018 ITTF World Team Championships.
Wang's mettle was tested at the 2019 ITTF Hungarian Open, where he had previously reached the final in 2018. He answered any doubts about his consistency by securing another second-place finish, defeating top-class opponents like Hugo Calderano and Fan Zhendong.
This success earned him the chance to shine at the World Championships Finals, where he won the Men's Doubles title partnering with Ma Long. He continued to impress with a runner-up finish at the 2019 ITTF Australian Open and claimed his first Men's Singles title at the 2019 ITTF Swedish Open.
Establishing himself as a prominent figure in the global table tennis community, Wang had a strong showing at the 2020 ITTF Qatar Open before a significant hiatus of 20 months.
Upon his return in November 2021, he quickly regained his form, reaching the Men's Singles final at the WTT Contender Novo Mesto and winning gold in Mixed Doubles at the 2021 World Championships Finals.
Wang's success continued in 2022, securing titles in Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles at Singapore Smash and claiming his first WTT Series Men's Singles trophy at WTT Star Contender ESS 2022.
By the end of 2022, Wang had climbed from 12th to a top-five ranking in the world. In the first half of 2023, he showcased exceptional performances at the Singapore Smash, narrowly missing out on a triple crown victory. He defended his Men's Singles crown at WTT Champions Macao 2023 with a dominant win over Ma Long and earned a silver medal at the 2023 ITTF World Championships Finals.
Wang's outstanding achievements over the past six months have earned him a staggering 3300 World Ranking points, putting him in a prime position to challenge Fan Zhendong for the world number one spot. With recent ranking adjustments, Wang surpassed Fan to become the new Men's Singles leader in the ITTF Table Tennis World Rankings.
