World number one Aryna Sabalenka criticizes WTA over finals organization in Mexico
Posted : 30 October 2023
World number one Aryna Sabalenka has expressed her disappointment with the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) regarding the organization of the season-ending Finals in Mexico. Despite winning her opening match against Maria Sakkari, Sabalenka stated that she felt "disrespected" by the WTA, emphasizing that the event's organization did not meet the expectations for a prestigious tournament like the Finals.
The choice of the venue for the Finals was confirmed quite late in early September, with the tournament taking place in the Mexican resort of Cancun after negotiations with Saudi Arabia fell through. The court construction was completed just days before the tournament began. While some players initially supported the idea of holding the tournament in Saudi Arabia, concerns were raised about potential discrimination against women in the country.
Sabalenka's dominant performance against Sakkari did not alleviate her concerns about the conditions at the event. She cited issues with court safety and inconsistency in bounce, as well as a lack of adequate practice time. These challenges, in her view, were unacceptable given the high stakes of the tournament. She and many other players expressed their dissatisfaction with the WTA's handling of the event.
The WTA Finals is a significant competition in women's tennis, and Sabalenka is currently ranked as the world's number one player. Her criticism highlights the importance of proper organization and player safety at such prestigious events.
