In the China Open, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka faced a tough challenge from British No. 1 Katie Boulter but managed to secure her spot in the last 16.
Despite Boulter having 12 break-point opportunities, she only converted twice, allowing Sabalenka to win in straight sets at the WTA 1000 event in Beijing. Jessica Pegula and Caroline Garcia also had to fight in three-set matches to advance.
Boulter missed crucial break-point chances in the first set, especially at 5-5, and Sabalenka capitalized by breaking her in the next game to take the set. Although Boulter broke late in the second set, she couldn't serve out the win, and Sabalenka won the set and the match 7-5, 7-6(2). Sabalenka's next opponent will be Jasmine Paolini, ranked No. 36 in the world.
While Boulter matched Sabalenka in winners, she struggled on break points, converting only 2 out of 12. Her inability to force a third set became a missed opportunity. Sabalenka had to withstand early pressure on her serve, saving eight break points in a crucial game before closing out the first set.
The second set remained on serve until Boulter broke in the ninth game, but Sabalenka immediately broke back. In the tie-breaker, Sabalenka's strength prevailed, securing her progress to the next round. In other matches, Jessica Pegula rallied from a set down to defeat Anna Blinkova, and Caroline Garcia won a three-set battle against Yulia Putintseva. Sabalenka, Pegula, and Garcia advanced to the last 16, with exciting matches from other top players still to come in the tournament.
