After a surprising victory over Daniil Medvedev on Sunday that propelled him back to the top of the global rankings, Carlos Alcaraz was allowed to luxuriate in his "wild" and "wonderful" Indian Wells victory.
The Spaniard, who once again replaced Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic at the top of the men's game, outplayed the previously in-form Medvedev in thrilling fashion to win in California in straight sets, 6-3 6-2.
After being forced to miss the season's first Grand Slam at Melbourne Park due to injury, Alcaraz has made a dominant comeback to the ATP Tour, going undefeated in six matches at Indian Wells. He now unquestionably appears destined to have a strong showing at Roland-Garros.
"It means a lot to me," Alcaraz said after the match. "To recover the No. 1 [ranking] is crazy for me.
"Especially to lift the trophy here, for me, means a lot... I love this tournament. I really enjoy my time here, and of course, I felt the love from the people from day one. For me, it's amazing to complete these 10 days like this.
With this humiliating loss, Medvedev's 19-match winning streak and three-tournament winning streak have come to an abrupt end. For Alcaraz, though, this might simply be another step toward reaching his absolute peak in time for the French Open, which would undoubtedly be concerning for his competitors.
