Wimbledon introduces new regulation for dress code
Posted : 06 July 2023
After 146 years of strict dress code requiring female tennis players to wear only white underwear, Wimbledon has finally implemented a new regulation allowing dark underwear as long as it is not longer than the skirt. Kazakh player Elena Rybakina became the first to embrace this change by wearing black pants under her skirt during her match against Shelby Rogers. The decision to revise the dress code came as a response to the discomfort and stress experienced by menstrual players.
The change in regulation was met with mixed reactions. Rybakina, ranked No. 3 in the world, expressed her support for the update, stating that life changes are always a positive thing.
However, some players, like Britain's Heather Watson, raised concerns about the new rule, noting that it could inadvertently reveal when they are on their period. Despite the varying opinions, the overall sentiment is that a change in thinking and embracing modernity is necessary.
The decision to allow dark underwear is seen as a significant step forward in addressing barriers faced by young girls and women in sports. A demonstration prior to last year's women's final, led by amateur player Gabriella Holmes and British footballer Holly Gordon, sparked media attention and called for an evolution in traditions while still preserving the essence of the tournament.
The organizers of Wimbledon have finally acknowledged the need to adapt to the times and create a more inclusive environment for all athletes.
