Wimbledon 2023: Naiktha Bains and Maia Lumsden reach Wimbledon quarter-finals, first British women's doubles pair since 1983
Posted : 11 July 2023
Naiktha Bains and Maia Lumsden have secured a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, making them the first British women's doubles pair to reach this stage since 1983. They defeated the Slovakian duo Viktoria Hruncakova and Tereza Mihalikova 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.
In the men's doubles, Britain's Neal Skupski and his Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof advanced to the third round. However, Jamie Murray and Taylor Townsend lost in the mixed doubles, while Olivia Nicholls and Jonny O'Mara progressed to the quarter-finals with a hard-fought victory.
Heather Watson and Joe Salisbury narrowly missed out on a quarter-final spot, losing in a close match against Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan. The last time Britain had a women's doubles pair in the quarter-finals was in 1983 with Jo Durie and Anne Hobbs.
The wildcard team of Bains and Lumsden has been impressive, causing upsets in earlier rounds. Lumsden, who battled long Covid, expressed gratitude for being able to return to professional tennis.
In the men's doubles, Skupski and Koolhof, the top seeds, secured a quarter-final berth after defeating Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler. Skupski's title defense in the mixed doubles with Desirae Krawczyk ended in the first round.
Skupski and Koolhof have high expectations this year after reaching their first Grand Slam final last year. However, Jacob Fearnley and Johannus Monday were eliminated in the second round, as were Connor Thomson and Toby Samuel, who lost to Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Santiago Gonzalez.
