Wimbledon 2023: Liam Broady defeats Casper Ruud on Centre Court, dream come true

Posted : 07 July 2023
Liam Broady fulfilled a childhood dream when he stepped onto Wimbledon's Centre Court on Thursday, and what followed was even more incredible.

Ranked 142nd in the world, Broady caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far by defeating fourth seed Casper Ruud in a five-set thriller.

This victory marked his first win against a top-five player and his first triumph on the prestigious Centre Court.

For Broady, this experience on the big stage contrasted with a memory from his youth when he lost the Wimbledon boys' singles final in 2011.

It haunted him throughout his career, but walking out onto Centre Court allowed him to overcome that feeling of discomfort and deliver a remarkable performance.

Although he previously suffered a straight-set defeat to Andy Murray on the same court in 2016, this time was different.

As a wildcard entrant, Broady has yet to break into the top 100 and has not won an ATP Tour title. Reaching the third round at Wimbledon in such an impressive manner is undoubtedly the pinnacle of his career thus far, earning him a prize of £131,000.

Being the humble person he is, Broady plans to reinvest the money in himself and support his team, consisting of two coaches and his brother.

Broady recognizes the financial challenges of professional tennis and intends to alleviate the burdens by ensuring the well-being of his family. With no car, holidays, or house, his focus is on providing support for his loved ones and securing their future.

Although his mother gets too nervous to watch his matches in their entirety, his sister Naomi, a current player and BBC pundit, was there to witness his remarkable victory over Ruud.

Broady's journey continues as he faces Canadian Denis Shapovalov, ranked 29th in the world, on court two in the next round.
