Wimbledon 2023 Day: Novak Djokovic faces Hubert Hurkacz in Wimbledon fourth-round tiebreakers; needs Monday to resolve
Posted : 10 July 2023
Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz will continue their fourth-round match at Wimbledon on Monday, with Djokovic needing only one set to advance.
Despite Hurkacz's powerful serve and his ability to force two tiebreakers, Djokovic's superior skills allowed him to come out on top in both instances. Djokovic will now face Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals, who defeated Alexander Bublik in a thrilling match.
After his late-night victory over Stan Wawrinka, Djokovic once again faced a race against time as the match approached 9pm on Centre Court before it even began. Hurkacz showed no signs of nerves as he held his serve in the opening game with impressive shots.
Both players swiftly held their service games, showcasing their power, and avoiding long rallies. However, Hurkacz had to recover from a 0-30 deficit to secure the ninth game.
The opening set was decided by a tiebreak, in which Hurkacz had a mini-break and three set points but failed to convert them due to nerves. Djokovic capitalized on the opportunity and won the set 8-6.
The second set saw Djokovic earn a break point but he couldn't break Hurkacz's serve. Despite a moment of lightheartedness between the players when Djokovic stumbled into the net, the tension remained high. Another tiebreaker followed, with Djokovic eventually winning it 8-6 to take a two-set lead.
Due to the impending curfew, play was suspended with just 25 minutes remaining. The match will resume on Monday with Djokovic in a favorable position, needing just one set to secure victory and advance to the quarter-finals.
