Wimbledon 2023 Day 9: Jessica Pegula loses to unseeded Vondrousova, faces top seed Iga Swiatek or Ukrainian Elina Svitolina
Posted : 11 July 2023
At Wimbledon, Jessica Pegula was defeated by unseeded Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.
On Court One, Czech woman Vondrousova defeated an American comeback to win 6-4 2-6 6-4.
While Pegula had lost all six of her Grand Slam quarterfinal matches, Vondrousova, 24, had never advanced past the second round at SW19.
Top seed Iga Swiatek or the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina will be Vondrousova's opponents.
This was Vondrousova's first quarterfinal since reaching the 2019 French Open final, when she was ranked 42nd in the world after a quick ascent through the ranks as a teenager.
Pegula, on the other hand, is a Grand Slam success late bloomer.
She didn't enter the top 100 until her seventh season on the WTA Tour, and the last two years have seen her lose all six of her Grand Slam quarterfinal matches.
