Wimbledon 2023 Day 8: Mirra Andreeva lost controversial Wimbledon match due to racquet throwing penalty, ultimately losing

Posted : 10 July 2023
Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva's Wimbledon journey came to a controversial end when she was penalized a point for throwing her racquet.

After already receiving a warning for a previous racquet toss, the 16-year-old qualifier was given a point penalty, granting match point to Madison Keys in their fourth-round match. Although Andreeva saved that point, she ultimately lost 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Andreeva vehemently protested to the umpire, claiming she had not thrown the racquet but had instead slid. However, she did not shake hands with the umpire as she quickly left the court.

The Russian had been two games away from victory in the second set before Keys made a comeback, forcing a tie-break that she won.

Expressing her frustration, Andreeva threw her racquet towards her bag and seemed to throw it again when Keys reached deuce at 5-2 in the third set.

This resulted in a second warning and an automatic point penalty, giving Keys match point. Andreeva argued with the umpire, insisting that she had slid and fallen rather than intentionally thrown the racquet.

Andreeva's exit comes after a code violation she received at the French Open for hitting a ball into the crowd. Despite her controversial actions, Andreeva had aimed to become the youngest player since Anna Kournikova in 1997 to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Keys, on the other hand, advances to her second Wimbledon quarter-final and will face the winner of the match between Aryna Sabalenka and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
