Wimbledon 2023 Day 7: Rublev wins Wimbledon quarter-finals with five-set victory

Posted : 09 July 2023
In a thrilling five-set encounter, Russia's Andrey Rublev secured his first-ever quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon with a remarkable victory over Alexander Bublik, including a stunning shot in the final game. Rublev triumphed with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 on Centre Court, showcasing his resilience and skill throughout the match.

Bublik caught the attention of the crowd with his unconventional underarm serves, winning both the fourth and eighth games of the second set. He fought back impressively, forcing the match into five sets before Rublev emerged as the victor.

In the quarter-finals, the seventh seed will face either reigning champion Novak Djokovic or Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, setting the stage for an exciting match.

Rublev demonstrated his exceptional shot-making abilities, setting up a match point with a stunning return after Bublik appeared to have hit a winning shot.

This milestone achievement means that the 25-year-old Rublev has now reached the quarter-finals of all Grand Slam tournaments. However, he has yet to progress beyond this stage, having previously lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the French Open twice, with three losses at the same stage in the US Open.

Despite sustaining a finger injury during the opener, Rublev showed great resilience. He took a medical timeout and continued playing with his finger bandaged. The set was ultimately decided by a double fault from Bublik on set point.

Bublik's unconventional underarm serves added excitement to the match, with Rublev managing to handle them, albeit not without challenges. Bublik's tactics proved to be risky, as Rublev's experience and skill allowed him to respond effectively.

Rublev's victory came after a hard-fought battle, with Bublik pushing back from a deficit to force a decisive fifth set.

Russian players were excluded from Wimbledon in 2022 due to their country's military invasion of Ukraine. However, they were welcomed back this year, and Rublev made an impressive debut on Centre Court, securing a crucial break in the seventh game of the final set to claim the victory.
