Wimbledon 2023 Day 7: Jessica Pegula wins Wimbledon quarterfinals against Lesia Tsurenko
Posted : 09 July 2023
Jessica Pegula, the American fourth seed, advanced to her first Wimbledon quarter-final with an impressive performance against Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine.
Pegula dominated the match, winning the first five games en route to a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 victory over the world number 60. Tsurenko, who had spent significantly more time on court than Pegula in the past week, struggled with errors throughout the match.
Pegula's next opponent in the quarter-finals will be Marketa Vondrousova, the 2019 French Open finalist. Vondrousova secured her spot in the next round with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against fellow Czech Marie Bouzkova.
In another match, 16-year-old Russian player Mirra Andreeva emerged victorious in the third round against Anastasia Potapova. She advanced to the last-16 stage where she will face American 25th seed Madison Keys.
During Pegula's match against Tsurenko, the roof on Court One was open as the weather improved at the All England Club. Pegula's powerful shots overwhelmed Tsurenko, who struggled to handle her opponent's relentless attack.
Pegula swiftly wrapped up the first set with an overhead winner and continued her dominance in the second set, despite a brief wobble when serving for the match.
Although Tsurenko called a medical timeout for a blister on her foot, Pegula maintained her focus. She eventually sealed the victory with a backhand winner, which was initially called out but overturned upon review. Pegula's confident display showcased her belief as she aims to make a breakthrough and contend for her first Grand Slam singles title.
