Wimbledon 2023 Day 5 results: Day five winners include Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Holger Rune

Posted : 07 July 2023
World number one Carlos Alcaraz secured his first victory on Centre Court at Wimbledon as he defeated Alexandre Muller of France, advancing to the third round of the tournament.

The 20-year-old Spaniard displayed a strong performance, winning the match with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 against the world number 84.

Although Alcaraz had previously lost to Jannik Sinner in the last 16 on Centre Court in 2022, he emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle against Muller on Friday.

In other matches, third seed Daniil Medvedev and sixth seed Holger Rune also secured wins, while 15th seed Alex de Minaur was defeated by Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini, the unseeded Italian who reached the final at Wimbledon in 2021, delivered an impressive performance, winning with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to eliminate De Minaur. De Minaur will later participate in the mixed doubles event alongside his girlfriend Katie Boulter, the British women's number one.

Alcaraz has been competing at Wimbledon for three years, and in 2021, he achieved a victory on Court Six before experiencing a loss on Court One. In 2022, he won three matches, including two on Court One and one on Court Two, before his defeat against Sinner.

Having started this year's Wimbledon with a win on Court One, Alcaraz's triumph over Muller marks an important milestone on the renowned Centre Court, and it is likely the first of many victories on this prestigious stage.

Expressing his delight, Alcaraz stated, "I'm really, really happy. It's my second match on Centre Court, and I lost the first one last year, so I'm really happy to play here again. It's something I wanted to enjoy every single second of, and I did."

Recognizing the significance of a strong start to the tournament, Alcaraz highlighted his great performance on grass and his continuous improvement and gaining of experience with each match he plays. He also emphasized the unique and special atmosphere of playing at Wimbledon, aiming to enjoy the sport and entertain the spectators.
