Wimbledon 2023 Day 5: Aryna Sabalenka advances to Wimbledon's third round after defeating Varvara Gracheva
Posted : 07 July 2023
In a hard-fought match, second seed Aryna Sabalenka battled back to secure a victory over France's Varvara Gracheva and advance to the third round of Wimbledon. Despite being one of the tournament favorites, Sabalenka initially struggled against the 41st-ranked Gracheva in the intense heat on Court One.
Sabalenka struggled with her serve, committing five double faults in the first set and facing three breaks of serve. The Australian Open champion seemed affected by the scorching sun and used bags of ice to cool down during the changeovers. After a string of unforced errors and missed opportunities, Sabalenka conceded the opening set to Gracheva.
However, Sabalenka regrouped and kept the second set on serve. With a powerful display of forehands, she eventually broke Gracheva's serve to level the match. In the third set, Sabalenka found her rhythm and dominance, securing a double-break to regain her usual level of performance. She closed out the match with a roaring ace, setting up a third-round clash against the 40th-ranked Anna Blinkova.
While Sabalenka overcame the early challenges and fought her way to victory, top-ranked Iga Swiatek and last year's runner-up Ons Jabeur are still set to play their matches later in the day, adding to the excitement of the Wimbledon tournament.
