Posted : 13 July 2023
Ons Jabeur staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Aryna Sabalenka and secure a spot in the Wimbledon women's singles final against unseeded Czech player Marketa Vondrousova.
Jabeur initially found herself trailing, down a set and 4-2, but she tapped into a surge of momentum and the enthusiastic support of the crowd to claim a hard-fought victory of 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3. This triumph propels her to a consecutive final appearance at the Championships and guarantees a new Wimbledon and Grand Slam champion on Saturday.
In the other semi-final, Vondrousova ended Elina Svitolina's impressive run with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win. Vondrousova's achievement is notable as she becomes the first unseeded player in the Open era to reach the Wimbledon women's singles final.
Jabeur, the sixth seed from Tunisia, had finished as the runner-up in last year's final against Elena Rybakina. Throughout her match against Sabalenka, Jabeur received passionate support from the Centre Court crowd, making it one of the standout matches of the tournament.
Expressing her gratitude in the on-court interview, Jabeur thanked the spectators for their unwavering support, acknowledging that their belief in her played a significant role in her victory. She also mentioned her work with a mental coach, hinting that she might write a book about her experiences.
The highly anticipated women's singles final will take place on Saturday, where Jabeur and Vondrousova will compete for the prestigious Wimbledon title.
