Wimbledon 2023 Day 11: Carlos Alcaraz reach Wimbledon semi-final, beating Holger Rune
Posted : 13 July 2023
Carlos Alcaraz, the top-ranked player in the world, has reached his first-ever Wimbledon semi-final with a straight sets victory over Holger Rune. This win sets the stage for a potentially thrilling final at SW19 between 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and Alcaraz, who is seen as Djokovic's successor.
Expressing his joy, Alcaraz said, "I'm absolutely amazed. This has been a dream of mine since I first started playing tennis. It's a dream come true to reach the semi-finals of such a prestigious tournament like Wimbledon. I'm performing at a high level, which I didn't anticipate on this surface. It's simply unbelievable."
Although Alcaraz emerged victorious in straight sets, his match against Rune was far from easy. The two 20-year-old talents were evenly matched, resulting in a tightly contested first set. Alcaraz was unable to secure a break point against his opponent, and he had to save one himself to push the set into a tie-break.
During the tie-break, Alcaraz capitalized on an untimely double fault by Rune, securing four consecutive points and ultimately winning the set in just over an hour. In the second set, Alcaraz displayed confidence in his serving game, not facing a single break point and securing one break himself to go up 5-4 before holding his serve to claim a two-set lead.
In the third set, Alcaraz broke Rune's serve early on, celebrating with elation as Rune made an error. Although Rune held his serve at 5-3 down, staving off a set point, Alcaraz sealed the match shortly thereafter with a composed hold to love.
In the upcoming semi-final, Alcaraz will face the third seed, Daniil Medvedev, who triumphed in a five-set thriller against Chris Eubanks. Medvedev initially dominated the first set, committing only one unforced error. However, Eubanks fought back fiercely, showcasing an aggressive playing style and breaking Medvedev twice to level the match.
With the crowd rallying behind Eubanks, much to Medvedev's dismay, the favorite player demonstrated his frustration by cupping his ear after hitting a remarkable winner down the line, as the applause was barely audible.
Medvedev's challenges continued when he received a warning for accidentally hitting a camera person with a ball. Despite these obstacles, Medvedev managed to force a deciding fifth set by winning the tie-break 7-4 in the fourth set, aided by a powerful ace.
In the opening game of the fifth set, Eubanks double faulted, granting Medvedev an early break. As Medvedev secured a double break, Eubanks's hopes of reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final slipped away, and Medvedev sealed the match.
