Wimbledon 2023: Andy Murray leads Stefanos Tsitsipas before curfew
Posted : 07 July 2023
Andy Murray showcased his brilliance at Wimbledon once again, leading Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling Centre Court match that was halted due to a 23:00 BST curfew.
Despite being ranked 40th, Murray displayed his pedigree on the grass courts, taking a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 lead before play was suspended. The match will resume on Friday as per the tournament restrictions.
The decision to stop play was made after Murray sealed the third set and tournament referee Gerry Armstrong consulted with both players. Murray signaled to his team that the match was being cut short, while Tsitsipas quickly packed up. They will return to Centre Court following the completion of the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexandre Muller on Friday afternoon.
The anticipation for this match was high since the draw was made, and it was considered the marquee matchup of the tournament thus far. The rivalry was fueled by their intense clash at the 2021 US Open, where Murray expressed his disappointment with Tsitsipas' prolonged bathroom break. However, this time, all the drama unfolded on the court.
Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, has been confident in his ability to make a deep run in the tournament despite not being seeded. Tsitsipas, on the other hand, faced speculation of being vulnerable to an upset due to his limited success on grass.
The home fans had hope that Murray, who has been resurgent since his hip surgery, could secure a significant Grand Slam victory. Nevertheless, Tsitsipas showcased his physical and mental sharpness, displaying the form that has made him a top contender in major tournaments.
