Nigeria's women's table tennis champion, Offiong Edem, revealed on Wednesday what she wants to be remembered for as an achievement in her career as a table tennis player—a quarter-final finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Edem will be competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics for the fifth time but without a medal to show for it, she promised a spirited display at the sport's biggest stage in France.
Playing at the ongoing World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena or Teslim Balogun Stadium, Edem also expressed her desire to advance far in the competition scheduled to be held from June 19 to 23.
“It's a great achievement to qualify for the Olympic Games. I am very excited to still be actively playing, and this will be my fifth time. One has to stay disciplined and committed.
“It wasn't an easy task, but I'm very happy I made it to my fifth Olympics, and I am going to give my best for my country," she said.
“Since qualifying, I have been practicing, and we also have tournaments here in Lagos that will help me prepare for the games in France," she added.
She mentioned that training in Germany would greatly enhance their preparations for the games.
“In 2020, I was among the top 50 players and lost in the second round. This time, I want to advance further, and I am focused on achieving that goal," she explained.
Edem, ranked 113th in the world, made her Olympic debut in Athens in 2004.
The former African Games champion, who will be making her fifth appearance in France, has been a key player for the Nigerian women's table tennis team.
