Veronika Kudermetova wins Pan Pacific Open, secures second WTA Tour title

Posted : 01 October 2023
Veronika Kudermetova clinched her second WTA Tour title with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jessica Pegula in the Pan Pacific Open final in Tokyo. Despite Pegula's comeback from a 3-0 deficit to level the first set at 5-5, Kudermetova capitalized on two consecutive double faults from Pegula at 6-5 to claim the first set. The Russian player then dominated the second set, securing her win in one hour and 24 minutes.

Reflecting on her performance, the 26-year-old Kudermetova expressed her happiness, stating, "I'm really happy about my performance. It's my second title, and I'm proud of myself." Kudermetova outshone Pegula in the winner's count, hitting 17 winners compared to Pegula's seven.

Kudermetova's previous title came in another WTA 500 event, the Charleston tournament in 2021. Meanwhile, in the China Open, Britain's Katie Boulter triumphed over Poland's Magdalena Frech with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in their first-round match. Boulter is set to face the world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, in the next round. Sabalenka secured her victory against American Sofia Kenin with a score of 6-1, 6-2.

In the men's last 16 at the Beijing Open, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz secured a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win against Lorenzo Musetti, setting up a quarter-final clash with Norway's Casper Ruud, who earned a hard-fought 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Italy's Jannik Sinner also delivered an impressive performance, completing a 6-2, 6-0 win against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.
