Vera Zvonareva made a triumphant return to form at the Bank of Communications Zhengzhou Open, securing her first Top 20 win in over two years. The 39-year-old former World No.2 defeated No.9 seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 7-6(5) in a match lasting 1 hour and 56 minutes.
Zvonareva's victory marked her first Top 20 win since Rome 2021, as she had been sidelined due to a foot injury and returned to competitive play in June. Her form has improved steadily, including a recent qualification for the US Open and reaching the quarterfinals in Ningbo.
Liudmila Samsonova, the No.11 seed, continued her strong momentum after her runner-up finish in Beijing by defeating Tatjana Maria 6-3, 6-3. Samsonova's aggressive style and confidence at the net helped secure her victory. She will face qualifier Laura Siegemund in the next round.
Petra Martic, the 2019 Zhengzhou finalist, secured an impressive win over Magda Linette with a score of 7-6(5), 6-1. This victory was significant for Martic, who had not previously defeated Linette in their three previous encounters. Martic's diverse game allowed her to pull ahead, and she will face No.7 seed Barbora Krejcikova in the next round.
