VEMP Open: Defending champion Edwards talks tough ahead of title defense

Posted : 09 May 2023
The defending VEMP Open champion, Marylove Edwards, has expressed confidence ahead of her VEMP National Open Tennis Championship title defence in Abuja.

The 2023 VEMP Open Championship kicked off with tennis action in the Round of 32 fixtures in the men's and women’s singles events on Monday. Edwards, on the sidelines of the competition, said she was in good shape to defend her title.

The defending champion, who overpowered number two seed Aanu Aitegbusi 6-2, 6-2 in the women’s singles event final at the last edition, said she was looking forward to an interesting challenge this year.

“From what I am seeing in the first round so far, it is obvious that most of the players with whom I am very familiar have all improved a lot." That tells you about the high standard of the tournament this year and gives me a clear picture of what to expect.

“It’s not going to be easy, but I have been practicing, and I think I am in good shape to successfully defend my title,” she said.

In the absence of her rival and former number one seed, Oyinlomo, Edwards said her absence made no difference, adding that she was confident in her abilities.

“Oyinlomo is no doubt a tough competitor, but I am always happy to play against her because she always brings out the best in me." You will recall that I defeated her (Quadre) to emerge champion of the 44th CBN Senior National Tennis Open Championships last year.

“So, whether she is here or not does not really make any difference to me because on a good day, I am capable of beating anyone. “My goal is to take each game one step at a time and never underestimate anyone because we are all in it to win,” she said.

The tournament’s top-ranked player is expected to begin her title defence against the tournament’s qualifier, Eunice Iorlumum, in a round-of-32 encounter on Tuesday.

The week-long tournament, which is in its fourth edition, is expected to end on Saturday.
